The Best Notion Setup for College Students in 2026

Notion can be anything, which is exactly why most student setups collapse by week three — they try to be everything. A setup that lasts a whole semester is built from a small number of databases that each do one job well. Here's the blueprint.

The four databases you actually need

  1. Assignments — every task with a course, due date, and status. This is the engine; see our assignment tracker guide for the exact properties.
  2. Courses — one row per class: professor, meeting times, room, and a link to that course's notes. Everything else can relate back to this.
  3. Notes — one page per lecture or topic, tagged by course. Nothing fancy; the goal is that you can find them later.
  4. Schedule — your weekly classes and commitments as a calendar.

That's it. Habit trackers, reading lists, and budgets are nice, but add them after the core four are a daily habit — not before.

How they connect

The one relationship worth setting up: link Assignments and Notes to Courses with a Notion relation property. Now opening a course page shows everything for that class in one place — upcoming work, past notes, logistics. This is the difference between a pile of pages and a system.

The dashboard page

Create one page called Home and embed filtered views of your databases as linked views:

  • Assignments due this week
  • Today's classes from Schedule
  • Recently edited Notes

Pin Home to the top of your sidebar. This one page becomes the thing you open every morning.

What to skip (for now)

  • Elaborate templates with 15 databases — you'll spend more time maintaining the system than studying.
  • Formulas and rollups on day one — add them when you hit a real limitation, not preemptively.
  • Someone else's aesthetic copied button-by-button — copy the structure, not the decoration.

Getting it aesthetic without the work

The structure above is 90% of the value; the last 10% — cover images, icons, consistent colors, a layout that's actually pleasant to open — is where hours disappear. If you want the four-database structure and the polished aesthetic layout already done, duplicate the template below and spend your time studying instead of styling.
